At the same time as Pride celebrations take place all over the world, the FIFA World Cup is being hosted in Russia, one of over 70 countries where same-sex relations are not allowed.
In the face of this, a small group of creative activists from Brazil, Spain, Russia, The Netherlands, United Kingdom and United States have teamed up to create a one-of-a-kind-jersey. A global symbol of equality and acceptance.
The World Cup jersey that united people across the globe to champion love in every form.
Summer 2018, a unique moment in time. The world celebrated LGBTQ Pride Month at the same time as the FIFA World Cup, hosted in Russia.
So we created a jersey for the biggest team on the planet: the ‘Same Team Jersey’. A rainbow jersey made using the strips of the national teams that played the World Cup with a badge on the arm that said ‘We belong to the same team’.
With a very low budget, we created a global movement championing equality and acceptance with thousands of people all over the world joining the team, including social influencers and celebrities such as Billie Jean King and Pelé.
The ‘Same Team Jersey’ even reached Russia where some brave people wore the rainbow jersey during the World Cup.
The limited-edition jerseys were auctioned. They all sold out with all the proceeds being donated to organizations fighting for equality in countries where it’s dangerous to be part of the LGBTQ community.
Results:
+200 Million impressions
Support from Pelé to Collin Martin (the only publicly gay soccer star in the world)
All jerseys sold out.
